German vs. American Cockroaches: Why It Matters Which One You Have

Small tan roaches in the kitchen are a different problem than big brown ones in the basement. Learn to tell German and American cockroaches apart and how each is treated.

By the Pest Control In US team

Not all roaches are the same problem. Our cockroach control technicians identify the species first, because it decides everything.

German cockroaches

Half an inch, tan, two dark stripes behind the head. Live indoors near food and water, breed explosively, and arrive in boxes, appliances and from adjoining apartments. Treated with gel baits and growth regulators in harborage — never sprays, which scatter them.

American cockroaches

Up to two inches, reddish brown, often called palmetto bugs in the South. Come in from sewers, drains, mulch and crawlspaces. Treated at the exterior and the entry points, with drain and crawlspace work.

Oriental cockroaches

Dark, slow, love damp basements and floor drains. Common in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Washington.

What not to do

Bug bombs and repellent sprays. They push roaches deeper and split populations across units.
